The (un)handyman

i grew up not knowing how to fix cars, use household tools, grow a garden, learn to survive in the woods, etc.  i guess living in a large city, i didn't have worry about some of those things or can hire a person to do the other tasks.  i still feel somewhat of an empty feeling when i can't fix what i would think to be a very simple project.  even though my dad is older now and can't/won't do most of those projects - i know at one point in his life, he could.....and he could do it with ease.

what ever happened to getting your own hands dirty to do something rather than having/paying someone else do it for you?  i can say i was spoiled and was never forced into blue collar labor/chores when i was younger.  sometimes i wish i had been forced to do so.....

this past weekend i installed 2 new toilets at my parents house and earlier this year i did the same along with other various home improvement projects after moving into my 20+ yr old townhome.  there is a great sense of accomplishment along with an uneasy feeling after doing such work.  it felt good that i grinded through the sweat and figuring out mistakes as they came along...and not getting electrocuted was a plus.  it's also scary knowing that although i completed something...i had to wonder, was it really competed correctly?!!  will my new sink leak after a few days?!  haha...i guess i'm really just glad i saved money doing the work myself.

anyways...it just got me thinking on other related matters regarding a 'back to basics' standpoint....like when was the last time a calculator wasn't present so you can do some simple math by hand?  heck, i'm even guilty of going through the trouble of pulling up my computer's calculator to figure out what's 78 x 5600.  haha... oh well.... gotta go with the flow i guess....

DOGS.........DIARRHEA

separate, these two are manageable....but bring them together, and you have one bad morning with lots of lysol.  luckily, odor was not a problem in today's adventure with the canine.  although i do have to say that cleaning up dog sh*t in your work clothes is rather cumbersome.  just an afterthought....

Opening Day 2007 (yesterday)

i'm a huge fan of baseball season.  a commercial on ESPN about opening day said it rightfully so - "it's a day where every fan believes that THIS is their year to win it all."  i love it......until:

STORY-

since i can't really afford to spend $7 on a beer at the moment, i decided to have my own personal opening night of baseball after work.  Astros on at 7pm.  had some leftover hotdogs.  got some ingredients for nachos.  even had plenty of beer on hand.  Roy Oswalt vs Pittsburgh.  all of this was waiting for me when i got home....

after walking the dog at 650pm, i turned on the tv to see that the game was in the 5th inning, tied 0-0.  WTF?!  it appears the game started at 6pm.....ok, my bad.  so i sit down, feeling rushed that i have to grab 2 beers to 'catch up' as if i were at the game, and i start eating.  i tell myself, 'it's a tied game, nothing really happening...lets keep watching'.  excitement level - high again.

a two run homer by the astros in the bottom of the 5th and i'm oozing with joy!  made some nachos and grabbed another beer.

then a home run by the pirates in the 8th causes more excitement...JUST because the game is that close.  2-1 astros.

anxiety sets in as the shaky, low-self esteem pitcher brad lidge comes in the 9th to close the game for the astros.  he strikes out the first batter.  the second batter gets a ground ball to shortstop.  2 outs.. top of the ninth...  and remember, opening night.  everyone's on their feet in the stadium, so i join them from my living room.

third batter. first pitch....  home run.  did i just see that?  unbelievable.  tied 2-2.  i sit down for the next 30 minutes to watch a losing effort by my team in 10 innings.

there are very few things that i truly get to enjoy on a regular basis.  ESPN forgot to mention in their commercial that the 50% of the teams that lose on opening night have fans sometimes going home unforgiving.  lucky for me, i was already home.

IT'S BEEN AWHILE OLD FRIEND...

well...i see that last august was my last post...  i blame it mostly on work over the past few months.  i just had no desire to get on the computer after working on one for over 12 hrs/day....in my car.  oh well, that life is over -

seems like a lot has happened since then:  bought a place, moved in w/gf, renovated,...engagements(not mine!), weddings...... got a car, quit a job - and today...started a new one.  no more roof climbing!  and tomorrow will be the first day i purchase gasoline from my own pocket in over 2 yrs.  oh yeah, and i have to pay for car insurance...haha.  it's all worth it....  at least that's what i think for now.

anyways... dunno how many peeps still on this thing.  i know i've lost some contact...
